Information theory provides a formal model of communication that includes a precise definition of efficient compression. We show that color-naming systems across languages achieve near-optimal compression and that this principle explains much of the variation across languages. These findings suggest a possible process for color category evolution that synthesizes continuous and discrete aspects of previous accounts. The generality of this principle suggests that it may also apply to other semantic domains.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1073\/pnas.1800521115","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2018,7,18]],"date-time":"2018-07-18T20:04:49Z","timestamp":1531944289000},"page":"7937-7942","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1073\/pnas.cm10313","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":133,"title":["Efficient compression in color naming and its evolution"],"prefix":"10.1073","volume":"115","author":[{"given":"Noga","family":"Zaslavsky","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Edmond and Lily Safra Center for Brain Sciences, The Hebrew University, Jerusalem 9190401, Israel;"},{"name":"Department of Linguistics, University of California, Berkeley, CA 94720;"}]},{"given":"Charles","family":"Kemp","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Psychology, Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA 15213;"}]},{"given":"Terry","family":"Regier","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Linguistics, University of California, Berkeley, CA 94720;"},{"name":"Cognitive Science Program, University of California, Berkeley, CA 94720;"}]},{"given":"Naftali","family":"Tishby","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Edmond and Lily Safra Center for Brain Sciences, The Hebrew University, Jerusalem 9190401, Israel;"},{"name":"The Benin School of Computer Science and Engineering, The Hebrew University, Jerusalem 9190401, Israel"}]}],"member":"341","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2018,7,18]]},"reference":[{"key":"e_1_3_3_1_2","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1073\/pnas.0335980100"},{"key":"e_1_3_3_2_2","first-page":"849","volume-title":"Advances in Neural Information Processing Systems","author":"Levy RP","year":"2007","unstructured":"RP Levy, TF Jaeger, Speakers optimize information density through syntactic reduction.
