This process is critical in helping organisms guide attention toward the most salient and novel features in the environment. Here, we follow known circuit mechanisms in the fruit fly olfactory system to derive a simple algorithm for habituation. We show, both empirically and analytically, that this algorithm is able to filter out redundant information, enhance discrimination between odors that share a similar background, and improve detection of novel components in odor mixtures. Overall, we propose an algorithmic perspective on the biological mechanism of habituation and use this perspective to understand how sensory physiology can affect odor perception. Our framework may also help toward understanding the effects of habituation in other more sophisticated neural systems.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1073\/pnas.1915252117","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2020,5,19]],"date-time":"2020-05-19T21:17:16Z","timestamp":1589923036000},"page":"12402-12410","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1073\/pnas.cm10313","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":23,"title":["Habituation as a neural algorithm for online odor discrimination"],"prefix":"10.1073","volume":"117","author":[{"given":"Yang","family":"Shen","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Simons Center for Quantitative Biology, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, Cold Spring Harbor, NY 11724;"}]},{"given":"Sanjoy","family":"Dasgupta","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Computer Science and Engineering Department, University of California San Diego, La Jolla, CA 92093"}]},{"given":"Saket","family":"Navlakha","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Simons Center for Quantitative Biology, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, Cold Spring Harbor, NY 11724;"}]}],"member":"341","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2020,5,19]]},"reference":[{"key":"e_1_3_4_1_2","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"2","DOI":"10.1152\/jn.90479.2008","article-title":"Neurobiology of a simple memory","volume":"100","author":"Wilson D.
