U.S.A."],"published-print":{"date-parts":[[2002,12,24]]},"abstract":"<jats:p>\n            The correct spatial expression of two\n            <jats:italic>Drosophila<\/jats:italic>\n            bithorax complex (BX-C) genes,\n            <jats:italic>abdominal-A<\/jats:italic>\n            (\n            <jats:italic>abdA<\/jats:italic>\n            ) and\n            <jats:italic>Abdominal-B<\/jats:italic>\n            (\n            <jats:italic>AbdB<\/jats:italic>\n            ), is dependent on the 100-kb intergenic\n            <jats:italic>infraabdominal<\/jats:italic>\n            (\n            <jats:italic>iab<\/jats:italic>\n            ) region. The\n            <jats:italic>iab<\/jats:italic>\n            region is known to contain a number of different domains (\n            <jats:italic>iab2<\/jats:italic>\n            through\n            <jats:italic>iab8<\/jats:italic>\n            ) that harbor cis-regulatory elements responsible for directing expression of\n            <jats:italic>abdA<\/jats:italic>\n            and\n            <jats:italic>AbdB<\/jats:italic>\n            in the second through eighth abdominal segments. Here, we use\n            <jats:italic>in situ<\/jats:italic>\n            hybridization to perform high-resolution mapping of the transcriptional activity in the\n            <jats:italic>iab<\/jats:italic>\n            control regions. We show that transcription of the control regions themselves is abundant and precedes activation of the\n            <jats:italic>abdA<\/jats:italic>\n            and\n            <jats:italic>AbdB<\/jats:italic>\n            genes. As with the homeotic genes of the BX-C, the transcription patterns of the RNAs from the\n            <jats:italic>iab<\/jats:italic>\n            control regions demonstrate colinearity with the sequence of the\n            <jats:italic>iab<\/jats:italic>\n            regions along the chromosome and the domains in the embryo under the control of the specific\n            <jats:italic>iab<\/jats:italic>\n            regions.
