U.S.A."],"published-print":{"date-parts":[[2000,10,24]]},"abstract":"<jats:p>\n            The neuron-restrictive silencer factor (NRSF; also known as REST\n for repressor element-1 silencing transcription factor) is a\n transcriptional repressor of multiple neuronal genes, but little is\n known about its function\n            <jats:italic>in vivo<\/jats:italic>\n            . NRSF is normally\n down-regulated upon neuronal differentiation. Constitutive expression\n of NRSF in the developing spinal cord of chicken embryos caused\n repression of two endogenous target genes, N-tubulin and\n Ng-CAM, but did not prevent overt neurogenesis. Nevertheless,\n commissural neurons that differentiated while constitutively expressing\n NRSF showed a significantly increased frequency of axon guidance\n errors. These data suggest that down-regulation of NRSF is necessary\n for the proper development of at least some classes of neurons\n            <jats:italic>in vivo<\/jats:italic>\n            .\n
