U.S.A."],"published-print":{"date-parts":[[2000,10,10]]},"abstract":"<jats:p>\n            By comparing 4,344 protein sequences from fission yeast\n            <jats:italic>Schizosaccharomyces pombe<\/jats:italic>\n            with all available eukaryotic\n sequences, we identified those genes that are conserved in\n            <jats:italic>S.\n pombe<\/jats:italic>\n            and nonfungal eukaryotes but are missing or highly\n diverged in the baker's yeast\n            <jats:italic>Saccharomyces cerevisiae<\/jats:italic>\n            .\n Since the radiation from the common ancestor with\n            <jats:italic>S.\n pombe<\/jats:italic>\n            ,\n            <jats:italic>S. cerevisiae<\/jats:italic>\n            appears to have lost about\n 300 genes, and about 300 more genes have diverged by far beyond\n expectation. The most notable feature of the set of genes lost in\n            <jats:italic>S. cerevisiae<\/jats:italic>\n            is the coelimination of functionally\n connected groups of proteins, such as the signalosome and the\n spliceosome components. We predict similar coelimination of the\n components of the posttranscriptional gene-silencing system that\n includes the recently identified RNA-dependent RNA polymerase. Because\n one of the functions of posttranscriptional silencing appears to be\n \u201ctaming\u201d of retrotransposons, the loss of this system in yeast\n could have triggered massive retrotransposition, resulting in\n elimination of introns and subsequent loss of spliceosome components\n that become dispensable. As the genome database grows, systematic\n analysis of coordinated gene loss may become a general approach for\n predicting new components of functional systems or even defining\n previously unknown functional complexes.\n
