U.S.A."],"published-print":{"date-parts":[[2001,12,18]]},"abstract":"<jats:p>The coxsackievirus and adenovirus receptor (CAR) mediates viral\n attachment and infection, but its physiologic functions have not been\n described. In nonpolarized cells, CAR localized to homotypic\n intercellular contacts, mediated homotypic cell aggregation, and\n recruited the tight junction protein ZO-1 to sites of cell\u2013cell\n contact. In polarized epithelial cells, CAR and ZO-1 colocalized to\n tight junctions and could be coprecipitated from cell lysates. CAR\n expression led to reduced passage of macromolecules and ions across\n cell monolayers, and soluble CAR inhibited the formation of functional\n tight junctions. Virus entry into polarized epithelium required\n disruption of tight junctions. These results indicate that CAR is a\n component of the tight junction and of the functional barrier to\n paracellular solute movement.
