The first attachment involves an initial reversible phase, followed by irreversible binding. After a latent period, the second end then attaches to the cell. Entry of the molecule begins immediately after binding of the second end has occurred, and entry is complete within 3 min. The polarity of entry, as judged by attainment of resistance to DNase I, is the reverse of that observed in normal phage injection.\n <\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1073\/pnas.69.6.1545","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2006,5,31]],"date-time":"2006-05-31T02:36:33Z","timestamp":1149042993000},"page":"1545-1549","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1073\/pnas.cm10313","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":9,"title":["Early Extracellular Events in Infection of Competent\n <i>Bacillus subtilis<\/i>\n by DNA of Bacteriophage SP82G"],"prefix":"10.1073","volume":"69","author":[{"given":"Gordon L.","family":"Williams","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Genetics Program, University of New Hampshire, Durham, N.H. 03824"},{"name":"Department of Biochemistry, University of New Hampshire, Durham, N.H. 03824"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"D.
