They are believed to play a role in facilitating invasion of fetal HLA-G+ extravillous trophoblasts (EVT) into maternal tissues, a process essential for establishment of healthy pregnancies. dNK are low-cytotoxic while nonetheless containing cytotoxic granules and functioning in immunity to viral infections, illustrated here with human cytomegalo virus (HCMV). Interaction of dNK with EVT leads to acquisition of HLA-G by dNK (trogocytosis), followed by a cycle of internalization, degradation, and reacquisition of HLA-G. Cytokine activation facilitates HLA-G degradation and coincides with increased cytotoxicity by dNK. Thus, the cycle provides both for NK tolerance and antiviral immune function of dNK.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1073\/pnas.1517724112","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2015,10,13]],"date-time":"2015-10-13T21:25:16Z","timestamp":1444771516000},"page":"13312-13317","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1073\/pnas.cm10313","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":150,"title":["The HLA-G cycle provides for both NK tolerance and immunity at the maternal\u2013fetal interface"],"prefix":"10.1073","volume":"112","author":[{"given":"Tamara","family":"Tilburgs","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Stem Cell and Regenerative Biology, Harvard University, Cambridge, MA 02138;"}]},{"given":"J.
