U.S.A."],"published-print":{"date-parts":[[2022,1,25]]},"abstract":"<jats:title>Significance<\/jats:title>\n          <jats:p>\n            Metagenomic data have recently transformed our view of the role played by sulfur metabolism in anoxic environments by showing that this trait is much more widespread than previously believed. A key enzyme in sulfur metabolism is the dissimilatory sulfite reductase DsrAB that is ubiquitous in organisms with a reductive, oxidative, or disproportionating activity. However, the function of some\n            <jats:italic>dsr<\/jats:italic>\n            genes, such as\n            <jats:italic>dsrD<\/jats:italic>\n            , has so far been unknown despite its use as a functional marker to genomically assign the type of sulfur energy metabolism, sometimes with unclear results.
