Moreover, they have been claimed to convey discrete general meanings. I address the open question of the proper characterization of nonmanual domain markers by studying brow raise in Catalan Sign Language (LSC). It marks conditional antecedents and other dependent clauses in the left periphery. This study aims to determine whether LSC conditionals offer new evidence in favor of one of the two types of competing analyses, and concludes that brow raise is a portmanteau marker of syntactic integration of the dependent clause into the matrix, potentially layered with other nonmanuals.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1075\/ihll.6.17que","type":"book-chapter","created":{"date-parts":[[2016,3,14]],"date-time":"2016-03-14T12:44:35Z","timestamp":1457959475000},"page":"369-386","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":2,"title":["Intonation and grammar in the visual-gestural modality"],"prefix":"10.1075","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-6466-2749","authenticated-orcid":true,"given":"Josep","family":"Quer","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"id":[{"id":"https:\/\/ror.org\/04n0g0b29","id-type":"ROR","asserted-by":"publisher"}],"name":"ICREA-Universitat Pompeu Fabra"}]}],"member":"1757","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2016,3,14]]},"reference":[{"key":"ihll.6.17que-CIT0001","volume-title":"Imperatives in LSC","author":"Alba","year":"2013"},{"key":"ihll.6.17que-CIT0002","volume-title":"A grammar of Diyari, South Australia","author":"Austin","year":"1981"},{"key":"ihll.6.17que-CIT0003","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1007\/s11049-011-9121-9"},{"key":"ihll.6.17que-CIT0004","volume-title":"American Sign Language typology","author":"Coulter","year":"1978"},{"key":"ihll.6.17que-CIT0005","first-page":"61","volume-title":"Facial expression as intonation in Israeli Sign Language: The case of neutral and counterfactual conditionals","author":"Dachkovsky","year":"2008"},{"key":"ihll.6.17que-CIT0006","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1177\/0023830909103175"},{"key":"ihll.6.17que-CIT0007","first-page":"71","article-title":"Understanding conjunctions","volume":"1","author":"Fischer","year":"1990","journal-title":"International Journal of Sign Linguistics"},{"key":"ihll.6.17que-CIT0008","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","DOI":"10.1515\/9783112418260","volume-title":"American Sign Language syntax","author":"Liddell","year":"1980"},{"key":"ihll.6.17que-CIT0009","volume-title":"Interfaces and WH-questions in sign languages","author":"Lillo-Martin","year":"2010"},{"key":"ihll.6.17que-CIT0010","volume-title":"Les construccions relatives en llengua de signes catalana (LSC)","author":"Mosella","year":"2012"},{"key":"ihll.6.17que-CIT0011","volume-title":"The syntax of American Sign Language: Functional categories and hierarchical structure","author":"Neidle","year":"2000"},{"key":"ihll.6.17que-CIT0012","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1177\/00238309990420020201"},{"key":"ihll.6.17que-CIT0013","volume-title":"Prosodic phonology","author":"Nespor","year":"1986"},{"key":"ihll.6.17que-CIT0014","first-page":"73","article-title":"V-to-Neg raising and negative concord in three sign languages","volume":"27","author":"Pfau","year":"2002","journal-title":"Rivista di Grammatica Generativa"},{"key":"ihll.6.17que-CIT0015","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1017\/CBO9780511712203.018"},{"key":"ihll.6.17que-CIT0016","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1017\/S0142716400009632"},{"key":"ihll.6.17que-CIT0017","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1075\/sll.2.2.04san"},{"key":"ihll.6.17que-CIT0018","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1111\/j.1467-968X.2010.01242.x"},{"key":"ihll.6.17que-CIT0019","first-page":"55","article-title":"Prosody","volume-title":"Sign languages (Handbooks of Linguistics and Communication Science, HSK","author":"Sandler","year":"2012"},{"key":"ihll.6.17que-CIT0020","first-page":"215","article-title":"Phonological and prosodic layering of nonmanuals in American Sign Language","volume-title":"The signs of language revisited","author":"Wilbur","year":"2000"},{"key":"ihll.6.17que-CIT0021","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1075\/sll.14.1.08wil"},{"key":"ihll.6.17que-CIT0022","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1075\/sll.2.1.03wil"}],"container-title":["Issues in Hispanic and Lusophone Linguistics","Intonational Grammar in Ibero-Romance"],"original-title":[],"language":"en","deposited":{"date-parts":[[2025,7,2]],"date-time":"2025-07-02T19:57:22Z","timestamp":1751486242000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/benjamins.com\/catalog\/ihll.6.17que"},"secondary":[{"URL":"https:\/\/www.degruyter.com\/document\/doi\/10.1075\/ihll.6.17que\/html","label":"DeGruyter"}]},"subtitle":["A case study on conditionals in Catalan Sign Language (LSC)"],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2016,3,14]]},"ISBN":["9789027258052","9789027267450"],"references-count":22,"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1075\/ihll.6.17que","archive":["Portico"],"relation":{},"ISSN":["2213-3887"],"issn-type":[{"value":"2213-3887","type":"print"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2016,3,14]]}}}
