It<\/jats:p>\n                    <jats:p>is argued that a system in which all syntactic variation is ascribed solely to<\/jats:p>\n                    <jats:p>microparametric differences in the make-up of functional heads, as assumed<\/jats:p>\n                    <jats:p>under the so-called Borer-Chomsky Conjecture, cannot account for actually<\/jats:p>\n                    <jats:p>attested patterns of variation. In the word-order domain, for example, the facts<\/jats:p>\n                    <jats:p>seem to point to the kind of bimodal distribution expected on a macroparametric<\/jats:p>\n                    <jats:p>view, with microparameters accounting for the observed \u201cnoise\u201d.
