It also analyzes \u2018prefabs\u2019 (<jats:xref>Bybee 2006<\/jats:xref>) they form as PPI and NPI. Second, it delineates the diachronic development of <jats:italic>totemo<\/jats:italic> from NPI to PPI and that of <jats:italic>amari<\/jats:italic> from PPI to NPI, and offers an explanatory account incorporating three concepts: counter-expectation (<jats:xref>Traugott 1999<\/jats:xref>), structural reanalysis and bifurcation\/divergence (<jats:xref>Bolinger 1968<\/jats:xref>). In a theoretical context of polarity studies, the paper supports <jats:xref>Hoeksema\u2019s (2012)<\/jats:xref> stance that comprehensive accounts need both a syntagmatic relationship (licenser-licensee) as well as a paradigmatic relationship with other similar items in
