Tamil Nadu discussed\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\ttwo possible attitudes. Proen\u00e7a (1625\u20131666), who wrote in Portuguese, thought that the most important task was to\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tconcentrate on what is useful <jats:italic>pera a pratica<\/jats:italic> \u201cfor practical purposes\u201d and wanted to master ordinary\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tlanguage, both (A) in its colloquial forms \u00a0\u2014 including substandard and dialectal variants\u00a0\u2014 and (B) in its more\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tstandardized form. Beschi (1680\u20131747), who wrote in Latin, thought he could become influential by mastering (C)\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<jats:italic>Centami\u1e3b<\/jats:italic>, the poetic \u201cmore elegant\u201d dialect, cultivated for many centuries by traditional\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tgrammarians and poets of Tamil Nadu. This article evokes the strategies of Proen\u00e7a, Beschi and others, who navigated\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tthe components of Tamil \u201ctriglossia\u201d, in which both (A) and (C) can coexist with (B), but not simultaneously.
