Although according to\nprescriptive grammars, agreement relationships are stable and deterministic, usage-based\ndata reveal considerable variation. Building on data retrieved from\nheTenTen<\/jats:italic> 2014, a billion-token web-crawled Hebrew corpus, we present and\ndiscuss two types of agreement alternations: (1) agreement targets which alternate between exhibiting feminine vs. masculine\ngender, full vs. default agreement, and formal vs. semantic agreement, and (2) controller competition, where an agreement\ntarget is controlled by one of two possible controllers. Naturally, this perspective on\nagreement highlights the exceptions and overlooks the regularities, yet we argue that an\nexamination of such alternations provides clues as to the true nature of the agreement\nrelation.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1075\/slcs.210.13mel","type":"book-chapter","created":{"date-parts":[[2020,3,2]],"date-time":"2020-03-02T12:33:15Z","timestamp":1583152395000},"page":"421-464","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":2,"title":["Agreement
