Res."],"published-print":{"date-parts":[[2006,4]]},"abstract":"<jats:title>Abstract<\/jats:title><jats:p>The attraction of several adult predators, genera <jats:italic>Elatophilus, Hemerobius<\/jats:italic> and <jats:italic>Sympherobius<\/jats:italic>, to the sex pheromones of pine bast scales, <jats:italic>Matsucoccus<\/jats:italic> Cockerell, has already been demonstrated. Here, the hypothesis that the larvae of these predators are similarly attracted to the host prey sex pheromone is tested. The response of predators was tested in field trials using pine tree arenas baited with the sex pheromones of <jats:italic>M. josephi<\/jats:italic> Bodenheimer &amp; Harpaz, <jats:italic>M. feytaudi<\/jats:italic> Ducasse and <jats:italic>M. matsumurae<\/jats:italic> Kuwana. Experiments were conducted in Israel in stands of <jats:italic>Pinus halepensis<\/jats:italic> infested by <jats:italic>M. josephi<\/jats:italic> and in Portugal in stands of <jats:italic>P. pinaster<\/jats:italic> infested by <jats:italic>M. feytaudi<\/jats:italic>, respectively. The selectivity of larvae for the three sex pheromones was tested in Petri dish arenas in the laboratory. In the field, the larval stages exhibited similar modes of attraction to those of the conspecific adults: <jats:italic>Elatophilus hebraicus<\/jats:italic> Pericart in Aleppo pine forest, <jats:italic>E. crassicornis<\/jats:italic> Reuter and <jats:italic>Hemerobius stigma<\/jats:italic> Stephens in the maritime pine forests. Laboratory choice tests confirmed the kairomonal selectivity of larvae. Both forest and laboratory tests demonstrated the response of a coccinellid of the genus <jats:italic>Rhyzobius<\/jats:italic> to the sex pheromones of <jats:italic>M. feytaudi<\/jats:italic> and <jats:italic>M. matsumurae<\/jats:italic>.
