We used an eye\u2010tracking paradigm to investigate whether H*, which has been argued to signal new information, evokes different eye fixations than L+H*, which has been argued to signal the presence of contrast. Our results demonstrate that although listeners interpret these accents differently, their interpretive domains overlap. L+H* creates a strong bias toward contrast referents whereas H* is compatible with both new and contrast referents.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1080\/03640210802138755","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2008,11,2]],"date-time":"2008-11-02T09:24:36Z","timestamp":1225617876000},"page":"1232-1244","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1002\/crossmark_policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":113,"title":["Interpreting Pitch Accents in Online Comprehension: H* vs. L+H*"],"prefix":"10.1111","volume":"32","author":[{"given":"Duane G.","family":"Watson","sequence":"first","affiliation":[]},{"given":"Michael K.","family":"Tanenhaus","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"given":"Christine A.","family":"Gunlogson","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]}],"member":"311","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2008,10]]},"reference":[{"key":"e_1_2_7_2_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1006\/jmla.1997.2558"},{"key":"e_1_2_7_3_1","first-page":"1","volume-title":"Focus and natural language processing","author":"Bartels C.","year":"1994"},{"key":"e_1_2_7_4_1","unstructured":"Beckman M.
