{"status":"ok","message-type":"work","message-version":"1.0.0","message":{"indexed":{"date-parts":[[2023,10,16]],"date-time":"2023-10-16T05:18:16Z","timestamp":1697433496663},"reference-count":11,"publisher":"Wiley","issue":"12","license":[{"start":{"date-parts":[[2007,3,29]],"date-time":"2007-03-29T00:00:00Z","timestamp":1175126400000},"content-version":"vor","delay-in-days":118,"URL":"http:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/termsAndConditions#vor"}],"content-domain":{"domain":["onlinelibrary.wiley.com"],"crossmark-restriction":true},"short-container-title":["Acta Paediatrica"],"published-print":{"date-parts":[[2006,12]]},"abstract":"<jats:title>Abstract<\/jats:title><jats:p> <jats:italic>Aim:<\/jats:italic> To determine the rate of rooming\u2010in among preterm infants born in a tertiary hospital. <jats:italic>Methods:<\/jats:italic> We reviewed the records of all preterm infants born at our hospital during a 5\u2010y period, 2000 to 2004. <jats:italic>Results:<\/jats:italic> Of the 18953 neonates born at our institution during this time, 1356 (7.2%) were &lt;37 wk gestational age. Considering only preterm infants with birthweight 1500 g, 806 (74.1%) stayed with their mothers and 282 (25.9%) were admitted to the NICU. Of all the preterm infants that initially stayed with their mothers, 42 (5.2%) needed to be transferred to the NICU. When we stratified these preterm infants according to birthweight, we found that 29% of those &lt;1750 g were transferred to the NICU, compared to only 5% of those 1750 g.<\/jats:p><jats:p> <jats:bold>Conclusion:<\/jats:bold> Our study supports the idea that the majority of preterm infants, especially those with birthweight &lt;1750 g, can safely remain near their mothers at all times during hospital stay, with both clinical and financial benefits. Neonates with birthweight &lt;1750 g should be evaluated carefully to decide whether rooming\u2010in is the best option.
