{"status":"ok","message-type":"work","message-version":"1.0.0","message":{"indexed":{"date-parts":[[2024,9,17]],"date-time":"2024-09-17T10:50:32Z","timestamp":1726570232101},"reference-count":0,"publisher":"Pluto Journals","issue":"2","license":[{"start":{"date-parts":[[2007,6,1]],"date-time":"2007-06-01T00:00:00Z","timestamp":1180656000000},"content-version":"unspecified","delay-in-days":0,"URL":"http:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by\/4.0\/"}],"content-domain":{"domain":[],"crossmark-restriction":false},"short-container-title":[],"published-print":{"date-parts":[[2007,6,1]]},"abstract":"<jats:title>Abstract<\/jats:title>\n            <jats:p>Nonaka and Takeuchi\u2019s highly influential account of tacit\u2013explicit knowledge\u2010conversion in Japan\u2019s knowledge\u2010creating companies has been instrumental in Knowledge Management\u2019s institutionalisation of Michael Polanyi\u2019s distinction between \u2018tacit knowledge\u2019 and \u2018explicit knowledge\u2019. But tacit knowledge has been misunderstood and what Nonaka and Takeuchi claim in the name of explicit knowledge does not make sense. Whereas Polanyi was concerned with the discovery of absolute truth about ontological reality, Nonaka and his colleagues insist that truth is \u2018in the eye of the beholder\u2019. Yet, Nonaka et al.\u2019s implicit nihilism seems to have gone unnoticed. Many people talk about explicit knowledge as if it existed on a par with scientific knowledge: a tangible commodity that is \u2018as real as rocks\u2019. Arguably, Nonaka and Takeuchi have offered a \u2018lesson from Japan\u2019 that has distorted Polanyi\u2019s concept of tacit knowing, inspired unwarranted faith in the viability of \u2018explicit knowledge\u2019, and ignored the significance of power mediated by \u2018high\u2010context\u2019 communication. This paper uses Ernst von Glasersfeld\u2019s work on radical constructivism to make sense of Polanyi\u2019s insights into tacit knowing without invoking notions of metaphysical truth.
