In this double\u2010blind randomized controlled pragmatic trial, we evaluated the effects of off\u2010the\u2010shelf supplements: \u03b1\u2010HICA, HMB\u2010FA and HMB\u2010Ca, on RET\u2010induced changes in body composition and performance. Forty men were blocked randomized to receive \u03b1\u2010HICA (<jats:italic>n<\/jats:italic> = 10, fat\u2010free mass [FFM] = 62.0 \u00b1 7.1\u2005kg), HMB\u2010FA (<jats:italic>n<\/jats:italic> = 11, FFM = 62.7 \u00b1 10.5\u2005kg), HMB\u2010Ca (<jats:italic>n<\/jats:italic> = 9, FFM = 65.6 \u00b1 10.1\u2005kg) or placebo (PLA; <jats:italic>n<\/jats:italic> = 10, FFM = 64.2 \u00b1 5.7\u2005kg). The training protocol consisted of a whole\u2010body resistance training routine, thrice weekly for 8 weeks. Body composition was assessed by dual\u2010energy x\u2010ray absorptiometry (DXA) and total body water (TBW) by whole\u2010body bioimpedance spectroscopy (BIS), both at baseline and at the end of weeks 4 and 8.\u00a0Time\u2010dependent changes were observed for increase in trunk FFM (<jats:italic>p<\/jats:italic> &lt; 0.05). No statistically significant between\u2010group or group\u2010by\u2010time interactions were observed. Supplementation with HMB (FA and Ca) or \u03b1\u2010HICA failed to enhance body composition to a greater extent than placebo.
