Thus, we determined the usefulness of raw BI measures in tracking body fluids changes during the preparation period prior to competition in elite Judo athletes. At baseline (weight stability), 27\u00a0male athletes were evaluated (23.2 \u00b1 2.8y) and again 1\u20133\u00a0days before competition (\u223c1\u20132\u00a0months apart). Athletes were free to gain\/lost weight based upon specific competition needs. Using dilution techniques (deuterium and bromide), total\u2010body water (TBW) and extracellular water were estimated, and intracellular water calculated as TBW minus extracellular water. Body fluid distribution was determined as Extra\u2010to\u2010\/Intracellular water (E\/I). Fat and fat\u2010free mass (FFM) was assessed by dual\u2010energy x\u2010ray absorptiometry. Resistance, reactance, and phase angle (PhA) were obtained from bioelectrical impedance spectroscopy (50\u2010kHz frequency). No differences in raw BI measures were observed between athletes that lost (<jats:italic>N<\/jats:italic> = 17) or gain weight (<jats:italic>N<\/jats:italic> = 10), except for fat, FFM, extracellular water, and EI (<jats:italic>p<\/jats:italic> &lt; 0.05). After adjusting for FFM and height, resistance explained TBW (<jats:italic>\u03b2<\/jats:italic> = \u22120.047, <jats:italic>p<\/jats:italic> = 0.002) and extracelular water (<jats:italic>\u03b2<\/jats:italic> = \u22120.025, <jats:italic>p<\/jats:italic> = 0.001). Reactance explained ECW (<jats:italic>\u03b2<\/jats:italic> = \u22120.098, <jats:italic>p<\/jats:italic> = 0.004) and EI (<jats:italic>\u03b2<\/jats:italic> = \u22120.004, <jats:italic>p<\/jats:italic> = 0.006), while PhA predicted TBW (<jats:italic>\u03b2<\/jats:italic> = 1.609, <jats:italic>p<\/jats:italic> = 0.047), ICW (<jats:italic>\u03b2<\/jats:italic> = 1.899, <jats:italic>p<\/jats:italic> = 0.001) and EI (<jats:italic>\u03b2<\/jats:italic> = \u22120.056, <jats:italic>p<\/jats:italic> = 0.001). Regardless of body composition changes, athletes who increase reactance and resistance reduced extracellular water and body fluids while those who raised PhA increased intracellular water.
