Proteins are targeted to the peroxisome matrix through interactions between specific targeting sequences and receptor proteins, followed by protein translocation across the peroxisomal membrane. Recent advances have shed light on the nature of the peroxisomal translocon in matrix protein import and the molecular mechanisms of receptor recycling. Furthermore, the endoplasmic reticulum has been shown to play an important role in peroxisomal membrane protein biogenesis. Defining the molecular events in peroxisome assembly may enhance our understanding of the etiology of human peroxisome biogenesis disorders.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1083\/jcb.201010022","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2011,4,4]],"date-time":"2011-04-04T16:59:55Z","timestamp":1301936395000},"page":"7-16","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1083\/jcb.crossmarkpolicy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":162,"title":["Peroxisome assembly: matrix and membrane protein biogenesis"],"prefix":"10.1083","volume":"193","author":[{"given":"Changle","family":"Ma","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Section of Molecular Biology, Division of Biological Sciences, University of California, San Diego, CA 92093"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Gaurav","family":"Agrawal","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Section of Molecular Biology, Division of Biological Sciences, University of California, San Diego, CA 92093"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Suresh","family":"Subramani","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Section of Molecular Biology, Division of Biological Sciences, University of California, San Diego, CA 92093"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"291","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2011,4,4]]},"reference":[{"key":"2023072302182766100_bib1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","first-page":"635","DOI":"10.1016\/S1097-2765(03)00062-5","article-title":"Pex8p: an intraperoxisomal organizer of the peroxisomal import machinery","volume":"11","author":"Agne","year":"2003","journal-title":"Mol.
