The PTT-X model was derived based on a combination of reptation and network theories, allowing in this way a microstructural justification for the kernel function. The gPTT model is based on the network theory, with an empirical kernel function for the rate of destruction of junctions, that proved to be effective fitting experimental rheological data for polymer melts and solutions. A review on the background of both models is provided and the two models are then compared considering simple flows. This comparison allows one to attribute in some way a microstructural nature to the parameters involved in the gPTT model. Also, a new analytical solution is derived for the Poiseuille flow of the PTT-X model.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1088\/1873-7005\/acd0d4","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2023,4,27]],"date-time":"2023-04-27T22:29:48Z","timestamp":1682634588000},"page":"035501","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1088\/crossmark-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":5,"title":["New insights into the extended and generalised PTT constitutive differential equations: weak flows"],"prefix":"10.1088","volume":"55","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-5477-3226","authenticated-orcid":true,"given":"L L","family":"Ferr\u00e1s","sequence":"first","affiliation":[]},{"given":"A M","family":"Afonso","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]}],"member":"266","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2023,5,9]]},"reference":[{"key":"fdracd0d4bib1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","first-page":"55","DOI":"10.1016\/S0377-0257(01)00159-8","article-title":"Study of steady pipe and channel flows of a single-mode Phan-Thien Tanner fluid","volume":"101","author":"Alves","year":"2001","journal-title":"J.
