Mater."],"published-print":{"date-parts":[[2020,1,1]]},"abstract":"<jats:title>Abstract<\/jats:title>\n               <jats:p>A thorough characterization of the title compound, (dimim)<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>[Fe<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>Cl<jats:sub>6<\/jats:sub>(<jats:italic>\u03bc<\/jats:italic>-O)], consisting of a (<jats:italic>\u03bc<\/jats:italic>-oxido)-bridged binuclear iron(III) complex and 1,3-dimethylimiazolium (dimim) cation, has been performed using a wide range of techniques. The room temperature disordered crystal structure of this compound transits to an incommensurately modulated crystal structure at 100 K; to our knowledge, the first one found for an imidazolium halometallate complex. The crystal structure was solved in the superspace group P<jats:inline-formula>\n                     <jats:tex-math>\n\n<\/jats:tex-math>\n                     <mml:math xmlns:mml=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1998\/Math\/MathML\" overflow=\"scroll\">\n                        <mml:mover accent=\"true\">\n                           <mml:mn>1<\/mml:mn>\n                           <mml:mo stretchy=\"true\">\u00af<\/mml:mo>\n                        <\/mml:mover>\n                     <\/mml:math>\n                     <jats:inline-graphic xmlns:xlink=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xlink\" xlink:href=\"jpmaterab423bieqn1.gif\" xlink:type=\"simple\"\/>\n                  <\/jats:inline-formula>(\/<jats:italic>\u03b1<\/jats:italic>\/<jats:italic>\u03b2<\/jats:italic>\/<jats:italic>\u03b3<\/jats:italic>)0 with modulation vector <jats:bold>q<\/jats:bold>\u00a0=\u00a00.1370(10)\u00a0 0.0982(10)\u00a0 0.326(2) at 100 K. Variable temperature synchrotron powder x-ray diffraction showed the presence of satellite peaks in addition to the main diffraction peaks up to 208 K. Furthermore, a thermal expansion study was performed with this technique from 100 to 383 K (near of its melting point) adressing questions about the nature and consequences of the ion self-assembly of this (<jats:italic>\u03bc<\/jats:italic>-oxido)-bridged binuclear iron(III) complex, as well as the molecular motion of the imidazolium cation within the crystalline structure as a response to the temperature effect.
