Through a comparative study of forum and chat-based mental health communities, this research examines how technical features of both platforms influence community cohesion by affecting communication patterns among members, including evenness of communication, speed of communication, and number of participants. This study collected four weeks of data from 20 forum-based and 20 chat-based mental health communities in mainland China. Multilevel mediation analyses show that chat-based communities were more cohesive with higher member retention, network connectedness, and language conformity. Chat-based platforms facilitated faster communication and greater evenness of receiving messages among participants which in turn fostered community cohesion.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1093\/jcmc\/zmab016","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2021,9,8]],"date-time":"2021-09-08T11:27:41Z","timestamp":1631100461000},"page":"403-421","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":22,"title":["Technical Features of Asynchronous and Synchronous Community Platforms and their Effects on Community Cohesion: A Comparative Study of Forum-based and Chat-based Online Mental Health Communities"],"prefix":"10.1093","volume":"26","author":[{"given":"Han","family":"Li","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"School of Journalism, Fudan University, Shanghai, 200433, China"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-8554-2137","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Robert E","family":"Kraut","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Human-Computer Interaction Institute, School of Computer Science, Carnegie Mellon University, PA 15213, USA"},{"name":"Tepper School of Business, Carnegie Mellon University, PA 15213, USA"}]},{"given":"Haiyi","family":"Zhu","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Human-Computer Interaction Institute, School of Computer Science, Carnegie Mellon University, PA 15213, USA"}]}],"member":"286","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2021,9,25]]},"reference":[{"issue":"6","key":"2021111800432366000_zmab016-B1","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"989","DOI":"10.1037\/0021-9010.88.6.989","article-title":"Cohesion and performance in groups: A meta-analytic clarification of construct relations","volume":"88","author":"Beal","year":"2003","journal-title":"Journal of Applied Psychology"},{"issue":"5","key":"2021111800432366000_zmab016-B2","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"1170","DOI":"10.1086\/228631","article-title":"Power and centrality: A family of measures","volume":"92","author":"Bonacich","year":"1987","journal-title":"American Journal of Sociology"},{"issue":"6","key":"2021111800432366000_zmab016-B3","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"726","DOI":"10.1177\/1046496412468072","article-title":"Cohesion: Conceptual and measurement issues","volume":"43","author":"Carron","year":"2012","journal-title":"Small Group Research"},{"issue":"10042","key":"2021111800432366000_zmab016-B4","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"376","DOI":"10.1016\/S0140-6736(16)30590-6","article-title":"The burden of mental, neurological, and substance use disorders in China and India: A systematic analysis of community representative epidemiological studies","volume":"388","author":"Charlson","year":"2016","journal-title":"The Lancet"},{"issue":"2","key":"2021111800432366000_zmab016-B5","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"149","DOI":"10.1287\/isre.1050.0051","article-title":"Is out of sight, out of mind?
