Within this context, fish personality, defined as consistent interindividual differences in behaviour across time and contexts, has been receiving increasing attention as a potential modulator of exposure, physiological sensitivity, and behavioural responses to environmental stressors, with potential population-level consequences.<\/jats:p>\n                  <jats:p>This review synthesises current evidence linking fish personality to contaminant exposure and sensitivity. The experimental frameworks and behavioural assays used in ecotoxicological studies were critically evaluated, revealing limitations in standardisation, repeatability, comparability, and ecological relevance. Overall, the review highlights how incorporating personality-based approaches can enhance the ecological realism of environmental risk assessment, while identifying key methodological gaps and challenges that must be addressed to improve the robustness and interpretability of behavioural endpoints in (eco)toxicology.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1093\/etojnl\/vgag062","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2026,3,21]],"date-time":"2026-03-21T10:15:19Z","timestamp":1774088119000},"source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":0,"title":["From personality to environmental risk: an (eco)toxicological perspective of behaviour"],"prefix":"10.1093","author":[{"given":"C S S","family":"Ferreira","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":") Centre for Marine and Environmental Studies (CESAM , Department of Biology, , 38100-193 Aveiro, 5","place":["Portugal"]},{"name":"University of Aveiro Centre for Marine and Environmental Studies (CESAM , Department of Biology, , 38100-193 Aveiro, 5","place":["Portugal"]}]},{"given":"M","family":"Barreto","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":") Centre for Marine and Environmental Studies (CESAM , Department of Biology, , 38100-193 Aveiro, 5","place":["Portugal"]},{"name":"University of Aveiro Centre for Marine and Environmental Studies (CESAM , Department of Biology, , 38100-193 Aveiro, 5","place":["Portugal"]}]},{"given":"I","family":"Lopes","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":") Centre for Marine and Environmental Studies (CESAM , Department of Biology, , 38100-193 Aveiro, 5","place":["Portugal"]},{"name":"University of Aveiro Centre for Marine and Environmental Studies (CESAM , Department of Biology, , 38100-193 Aveiro, 5","place":["Portugal"]}]},{"given":"M","family":"Faria","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":") Institute of Environmental Assessment and Water Research (IDAEA-CSIC , , 18, Barcelona, 08034,","place":["Spain"]},{"name":"Jordi Girona Institute of Environmental Assessment and Water Research (IDAEA-CSIC , , 18, Barcelona, 08034,","place":["Spain"]}]},{"given":"M","family":"Oliveira","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":") Centre for Marine and Environmental Studies (CESAM , Department of Biology, , 38100-193 Aveiro, 5","place":["Portugal"]},{"name":"University of Aveiro Centre for Marine and Environmental Studies (CESAM , Department of Biology, , 38100-193 Aveiro, 5","place":["Portugal"]}]}],"member":"286","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2026,3,20]]},"container-title":["Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry"],"original-title":[],"language":"en","link":[{"URL":"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/etc\/advance-article-pdf\/doi\/10.1093\/etojnl\/vgag062\/67454233\/vgag062.pdf","content-type":"application\/pdf","content-version":"am","intended-application":"syndication"},{"URL":"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/etc\/advance-article-pdf\/doi\/10.1093\/etojnl\/vgag062\/67454233\/vgag062.pdf","content-type":"unspecified","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"similarity-checking"}],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2026,3,21]],"date-time":"2026-03-21T10:15:19Z","timestamp":1774088119000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/etc\/advance-article\/doi\/10.1093\/etojnl\/vgag062\/8532522"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2026,3,20]]},"references-count":0,"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1093\/etojnl\/vgag062","relation":{},"ISSN":["0730-7268","1552-8618"],"issn-type":[{"value":"0730-7268","type":"print"},{"value":"1552-8618","type":"electronic"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2026,3,20]]},"article-number":"vgag062"}}
