Strain DC-196<jats:sup>T<\/jats:sup> was characterized as a Gram-negative short rod that was catalase- and oxidase-positive, and able to grow at 10\u201340\u2005\u00b0C, pH\u20056\u20139 and in NaCl concentrations as high as 3\u200a%. Chemotaxonomically, C<jats:sub>18\u200a:\u200a1<\/jats:sub> was observed to be the predominant cellular fatty acid and ubiquinone 10 (Q10) was the predominant respiratory quinone. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was determined to be 66\u2005mol%. On the basis of the genotypic, phenotypic and chemotaxonomic characteristics, strain DC-196<jats:sup>T<\/jats:sup> was assigned to the genus <jats:italic>Shinella<\/jats:italic>, although with distinctive features.
