Preliminary analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence showed that this strain belonged to the genus<jats:italic>Aeromonas<\/jats:italic>, the nearest species being<jats:italic>Aeromonas veronii<\/jats:italic>(99.5\u200a% similarity, with seven different nucleotides). A polyphasic study based on a multilocus phylogenetic analysis of five housekeeping genes (<jats:italic>gyrB<\/jats:italic>,<jats:italic>rpoD<\/jats:italic>,<jats:italic>recA<\/jats:italic>,<jats:italic>dnaJ<\/jats:italic>and<jats:italic>gyrA<\/jats:italic>; 3684\u2005bp) showed isolate 717<jats:sup>T<\/jats:sup>to be an independent phylogenetic line, with<jats:italic>Aeromonas sobria<\/jats:italic>,<jats:italic>Aeromonas veronii<\/jats:italic>and<jats:italic>Aeromonas allosaccharophila<\/jats:italic>as the closest neighbour species.
