Both isolates were Gram-stain-variable, endospore-forming rods that were catalase-, oxidase- and<jats:italic>\u03b2<\/jats:italic>-galactosidase-positive, and able to grow at 25\u201350\u2005\u00b0C and pH\u20057.0\u20139.0, with optimum growth at 37\u2005\u00b0C and pH\u20057. The predominant cellular fatty acids were anteiso-C<jats:sub>15\u200a:\u200a0<\/jats:sub>, iso-C<jats:sub>15\u200a:\u200a0<\/jats:sub>, iso-C<jats:sub>16\u200a:\u200a0<\/jats:sub>, anteiso-C<jats:sub>17\u200a:\u200a0<\/jats:sub>and iso-C<jats:sub>17\u200a:\u200a0<\/jats:sub>; the major respiratory quinone was menaquinone MK-7; the cell wall peptidoglycan was of type A1<jats:italic>\u03b3<\/jats:italic>; and the DNA G+C content was 49\u2005mol%. These characteristics, as well as data from 16S RNA gene sequence analysis, showed that these strains were affiliated with the genus<jats:italic>Paenibacillus<\/jats:italic>; the type strains of<jats:italic>Paenibacillus ginsengarvi<\/jats:italic>and<jats:italic>Paenibacillus hodogayensis<\/jats:italic>were among their closest neighbours (&lt;94.2\u200a% sequence similarity). Nevertheless, the hypothesis that strains MC-246<jats:sup>T<\/jats:sup>and MC-247 could represent a novel species was supported by the low 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity values shared with other members of the genus<jats:italic>Paenibacillus<\/jats:italic>and by the observation of distinct biochemical and physiological traits. Strains MC-246<jats:sup>T<\/jats:sup>and MC-247 shared 99.6\u200a% 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity and showed almost identical MALDI-TOF mass spectra, but could be distinguished at the phenotypic and genotypic level.
