The organisms were chemoheterotrophic, spherical and pink-pigmented, had an optimum growth temperature of about 30\u201335 \u00b0C and an optimum pH for growth of around 7.5\u20138.5. The predominant fatty acids were C<jats:sub>18\u200a:\u200a1<\/jats:sub>\u03c99<jats:italic>c<\/jats:italic> and C<jats:sub>16\u200a:\u200a0<\/jats:sub>. The two strains were able to assimilate several sugars and organic acids. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis confirmed the affiliation of these organisms to the phylum \u2018<jats:italic>Planctomycetes<\/jats:italic>\u2019; they showed highest similarity to the type strains of <jats:italic>Singulisphaera acidiphila<\/jats:italic> (92.4\u200a%) and <jats:italic>Isosphaera pallida<\/jats:italic> (91.9\u200a%). On the basis of physiological, biochemical and chemotaxonomic characteristics, strains OJF2<jats:sup>T<\/jats:sup> and OJF8 are considered to represent a novel species of a new genus of the order <jats:italic>Planctomycetales<\/jats:italic>, for which the name <jats:italic>Aquisphaera giovannonii<\/jats:italic> gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed.
