Cells were catalase- and oxidase-positive. Growth occurred at 15\u201337 \u00b0C, at pH 7\u201310 and with &lt;8\u200a% (w\/v) NaCl (optimum growth: 30 \u00b0C, pH 7\u20138 and 1\u20133\u200a% NaCl). The major respiratory quinone was menaquinone 7, the G+C content of the genomic DNA was 36.5 mol% and the cell wall contained <jats:italic>meso<\/jats:italic>-diaminopimelic acid. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, strain DS22<jats:sup>T<\/jats:sup> was a member of the genus <jats:italic>Bacillus<\/jats:italic>. Its closest phylogenetic neighbours were <jats:italic>Bacillus horneckiae<\/jats:italic> NRRL B-59162<jats:sup>T<\/jats:sup> (98.5\u200a% 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity), <jats:italic>Bacillus oceanisediminis<\/jats:italic> H2<jats:sup>T<\/jats:sup> (97.9\u200a%), <jats:italic>Bacillus infantis<\/jats:italic> SMC 4352-1<jats:sup>T<\/jats:sup> (97.4\u200a%), <jats:italic>Bacillus firmus<\/jats:italic> IAM 12464<jats:sup>T<\/jats:sup> (96.8\u200a%) and <jats:italic>Bacillus muralis<\/jats:italic> LMG 20238<jats:sup>T<\/jats:sup> (96.8\u200a%). DNA\u2013DNA hybridization, and biochemical and physiological characterization allowed the differentiation of strain DS22<jats:sup>T<\/jats:sup> from its closest phylogenetic neighbours. The data supports the proposal of a novel species, <jats:italic>Bacillus purgationiresistans<\/jats:italic> sp. nov.; the type strain is DS22<jats:sup>T<\/jats:sup> (\u200a=\u200aDSM 23494<jats:sup>T<\/jats:sup>\u200a=\u200aNRRL B-59432<jats:sup>T<\/jats:sup>\u200a=\u200aLMG
