{"status":"ok","message-type":"work","message-version":"1.0.0","message":{"indexed":{"date-parts":[[2025,12,17]],"date-time":"2025-12-17T08:12:24Z","timestamp":1765959144540},"reference-count":17,"publisher":"Microbiology Society","issue":"3","content-domain":{"domain":[],"crossmark-restriction":false},"short-container-title":[],"published-print":{"date-parts":[[2004,5,1]]},"abstract":"<jats:p>Seven phylloplane yeast strains that were collected in the Arr\u00e1bida Natural Park, Portugal, and identified preliminarily as<jats:italic>Bullera alba<\/jats:italic>, the anamorphic stage of<jats:italic>Bulleromyces albus<\/jats:italic>, were investigated. In contrast to<jats:italic>Bulleromyces albus<\/jats:italic>, these isolates produced a brownish pigment when grown on potato dextrose agar. The pigment caused darkening of the cultures and diffused into the culture medium. Mating studies revealed that the Arr\u00e1bida isolates did not react with the different mating types of<jats:italic>Bulleromyces albus<\/jats:italic>, but were sexually compatible with them and produced mycelium with clamp connections, haustoria and transversally septate basidia that ejected the basidiospores. Various taxonomic criteria that were evaluated during the present study and comparison with other sexual taxa of the Tremellales indicated that this teleomorph should be classified in a novel genus. Therefore,<jats:italic>Auriculibuller fuscus<\/jats:italic>gen. nov., sp. nov. (type strain, PYCC 5690<jats:sup>T<\/jats:sup>=CBS 9648<jats:sup>T<\/jats:sup>) is proposed. In addition, during the course of this investigation, a member of a novel<jats:italic>Bullera<\/jats:italic>species,<jats:italic>Bullera japonica<\/jats:italic>sp. nov. (type strain, PYCC 4534<jats:sup>T<\/jats:sup>=CBS 2013<jats:sup>T<\/jats:sup>), was found among collection isolates that were identified formerly as<jats:italic>Bullera alba<\/jats:italic>.
