They were found to be identical in phenotypic properties and shared high (98.5\u201399.8\u200a%) pairwise 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity. Multiple 16S rRNA genes were found to be present in the isolates as well as<jats:named-content xmlns:xlink=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xlink\" content-type=\"species\" xlink:type=\"simple\"><jats:ext-link ext-link-type=\"uri\" xlink:href=\"http:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1601\/nm.10940\" xlink:type=\"simple\"><jats:italic>Pelosinus fermentans<\/jats:italic><\/jats:ext-link><\/jats:named-content>DSM 17108<jats:sup>T<\/jats:sup>and<jats:named-content xmlns:xlink=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xlink\" content-type=\"species\" xlink:type=\"simple\"><jats:ext-link ext-link-type=\"uri\" xlink:href=\"http:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1601\/nm.11042\" xlink:type=\"simple\"><jats:italic>Sporotalea propionica<\/jats:italic><\/jats:ext-link><\/jats:named-content>DSM 13327<jats:sup>T<\/jats:sup>. Strains SHI-1<jats:sup>T<\/jats:sup>and SHI-2 could be differentiated from their closest phylogenetic relatives,<jats:named-content xmlns:xlink=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xlink\" content-type=\"species\" xlink:type=\"simple\"><jats:ext-link ext-link-type=\"uri\" xlink:href=\"http:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1601\/nm.10940\" xlink:type=\"simple\"><jats:italic>P. fermentans<\/jats:italic><\/jats:ext-link><\/jats:named-content>DSM 17108<jats:sup>T<\/jats:sup>and<jats:named-content xmlns:xlink=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xlink\" content-type=\"species\" xlink:type=\"simple\"><jats:ext-link ext-link-type=\"uri\" xlink:href=\"http:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1601\/nm.11042\" xlink:type=\"simple\"><jats:italic>S. propionica<\/jats:italic><\/jats:ext-link><\/jats:named-content>DSM 13327<jats:sup>T<\/jats:sup>, on the basis of their phenotypic and phylogenetic properties. The isolates were Gram-negative, spore-forming, motile rods with peritrichous flagella. Growth occurred at 10\u201342 \u00b0C and pH 5.5\u20138.5. Fermentative growth was observed on Casamino acids, fructose, fumarate, glucose, glycerol, pyruvate and yeast extract. The major organic acids produced from glucose and glycerol fermentation were propionate and acetate. The major organic acids produced from fermentation of fumarate were propionate, acetate and succinate. The major cellular fatty acids were summed feature 4 (consisting of C<jats:sub>15\u200a:\u200a1<\/jats:sub>\u03c98<jats:italic>c<\/jats:italic>and\/or C<jats:sub>15\u200a:\u200a2<\/jats:sub>), summed feature 8 (consisting of C<jats:sub>17\u200a:\u200a1<\/jats:sub>\u03c98<jats:italic>c<\/jats:italic>and\/or C<jats:sub>17\u200a:\u200a2<\/jats:sub>) and C<jats:sub>14\u200a:\u200a0<\/jats:sub>dimethyl aldehyde. The polar lipids comprised aminophospholipids, including phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylserine, and an unknown phospholipid. The genomic DNA G+C content was 39.2 mol%. We propose that strains SHI-1<jats:sup>T<\/jats:sup>and SHI-2 are assigned to a novel species of the genus<jats:named-content xmlns:xlink=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xlink\" content-type=\"genus\" xlink:type=\"simple\"><jats:ext-link ext-link-type=\"uri\" xlink:href=\"http:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1601\/nm.10416\" xlink:type=\"simple\"><jats:italic>Pelosinus<\/jats:italic><\/jats:ext-link><\/jats:named-content>, with the name<jats:italic>Pelosinus<\/jats:italic><jats:italic>defluvii<\/jats:italic>sp. nov. (type strain SHI-1<jats:sup>T<\/jats:sup>\u200a=\u200aNRRL Y-59407<jats:sup>T<\/jats:sup>\u200a=\u200aLMG 25549<jats:sup>T<\/jats:sup>). The description of the genus<jats:named-content xmlns:xlink=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xlink\" content-type=\"genus\" xlink:type=\"simple\"><jats:ext-link ext-link-type=\"uri\" xlink:href=\"http:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1601\/nm.10416\" xlink:type=\"simple\"><jats:italic>Pelosinus<\/jats:italic><\/jats:ext-link><\/jats:named-content>is emended. We also propose the transfer of<jats:named-content xmlns:xlink=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xlink\" content-type=\"species\" xlink:type=\"simple\"><jats:ext-link ext-link-type=\"uri\" xlink:href=\"http:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1601\/nm.11042\" xlink:type=\"simple\"><jats:italic>S. propionica<\/jats:italic><\/jats:ext-link><\/jats:named-content>to the genus<jats:named-content xmlns:xlink=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xlink\" content-type=\"genus\" xlink:type=\"simple\"><jats:ext-link ext-link-type=\"uri\" xlink:href=\"http:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1601\/nm.10416\" xlink:type=\"simple\"><jats:italic>Pelosinus<\/jats:italic><\/jats:ext-link><\/jats:named-content>as<jats:italic>Pelosinus<\/jats:italic><jats:italic>propionicus<\/jats:italic>comb. nov.
