{"status":"ok","message-type":"work","message-version":"1.0.0","message":{"indexed":{"date-parts":[[2026,4,29]],"date-time":"2026-04-29T23:13:23Z","timestamp":1777504403233,"version":"3.51.4"},"reference-count":30,"publisher":"Microbiology Society","issue":"8","content-domain":{"domain":[],"crossmark-restriction":false},"short-container-title":[],"published-print":{"date-parts":[[2006,8,1]]},"abstract":"<jats:p>Two novel facultatively anaerobic bacterial strains, BL-34<jats:sup>T<\/jats:sup>and BL-35, isolated from groundwater contaminated by a mixture of chlorosolvents were characterized using a polyphasic approach. The two strains exhibited essentially identical taxonomic features except for a vitamin B<jats:sub>12<\/jats:sub>requirement by strain BL-35 for optimal growth. Phylogenetically, the isolates were affiliated with members of the family<jats:italic>Propionibacteriaceae<\/jats:italic>and were placed in a phylogenetic branch adjacent to, but distinct from, those of the genera<jats:italic>Propionimicrobium<\/jats:italic>,<jats:italic>Propionibacterium<\/jats:italic>,<jats:italic>Luteococcus<\/jats:italic>,<jats:italic>Propioniferax<\/jats:italic>and<jats:italic>Tessaracoccus<\/jats:italic>. The cells of the novel strains were Gram-positive, non-motile, non-spore-forming pleomorphic rods. They produced catalase but not oxidase, and nitrate reduction did not occur in peptone\/yeast extract\/glucose medium. Propionate and acetate were the predominant products of glucose fermentation. Fermentation occurred in the presence of 1,2-dichloroethane and 1,1,2-trichloroethane at concentrations up to at least 9.8\u2005mM. The genomic DNA G+C content was 67.5\u201367.9\u2005mol%. Menaquinone MK-9(H<jats:sub>4<\/jats:sub>) was the predominant respiratory quinone and<jats:italic>meso<\/jats:italic>-diaminopimelic acid was present in the cell-wall peptidoglycan layer. The major cellular fatty acids were C<jats:sub>15\u200a:\u200a0<\/jats:sub>and anteiso-C<jats:sub>15\u200a:\u200a0<\/jats:sub>. On the basis of the results obtained in this study, strains BL-34<jats:sup>T<\/jats:sup>and BL-35 should be classified within a novel taxon, for which the name<jats:italic>Brooklawnia cerclae<\/jats:italic>gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of<jats:italic>Brooklawnia cerclae<\/jats:italic>is BL-34<jats:sup>T<\/jats:sup>(=LMG 23248<jats:sup>T<\/jats:sup>=NRRL B-41418<jats:sup>T<\/jats:sup>).
