This organism formed small rod-shaped cells, was aerobic, heterotrophic, catalase-positive and oxidase-negative and had an optimum growth temperature of 35\u200a\u00b0C and an optimum pH of 9.5. The strain possessed a B2<jats:italic>\u03b2<\/jats:italic>-type cell-wall peptidoglycan, with <jats:sc>d<\/jats:sc>-Orn as the diagnostic diamino acid. The major respiratory quinones were unsaturated menaquinones with 13 and 14 isoprene units. The predominant fatty acids were anteiso-15\u200a:\u200a0, iso-16\u200a:\u200a0, iso-14\u200a:\u200a0 and iso-15\u200a:\u200a0. The G+C content of the DNA was 67.1\u2005mol%. In a 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, strain AC4r<jats:sup>T<\/jats:sup> showed the highest level of similarity (99.2\u200a%) to the type strain of <jats:italic>Microcella putealis<\/jats:italic>; however, the DNA\u2013DNA reassociation value between these two organisms was low (38.3\u200a%). On the basis of phylogenetic analysis, the DNA\u2013DNA reassociation value and distinct phenotypic characteristics, strain AC4r<jats:sup>T<\/jats:sup> represents a novel species within the genus <jats:italic>Microcella<\/jats:italic>, for which the name <jats:italic>Microcella alkaliphila<\/jats:italic> sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is AC4r<jats:sup>T<\/jats:sup> (=LMG 22690<jats:sup>T<\/jats:sup>=CIP
