The soil sample was irradiated before serial dilution plating was performed using one-tenth-strength plate count agar. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequences showed these organisms to represent a novel species of the genus <jats:italic>Deinococcus<\/jats:italic>, having sequence similarities of 87.3\u201390.8\u200a% with respect to recognized <jats:italic>Deinococcus<\/jats:italic> species. Strains KR-196, KR-198 and KR-200<jats:sup>T<\/jats:sup> were aerobic and showed optimum growth at 30\u200a\u00b0C and pH\u20056.5\u20138.0. The major respiratory menaquinone was MK-8. The predominant fatty acids in these strains were 16\u200a:\u200a1<jats:italic>\u03c9<\/jats:italic>7<jats:italic>c<\/jats:italic>, 16\u200a:\u200a0, 15\u200a:\u200a1<jats:italic>\u03c9<\/jats:italic>6<jats:italic>c<\/jats:italic>, 17\u200a:\u200a0 and 18\u200a:\u200a0. The DNA G+C content of strain KR-200<jats:sup>T<\/jats:sup> was 63.9\u2005mol%. Strains KR-196, KR-198 and KR-200<jats:sup>T<\/jats:sup> were found to be resistant to &gt;10\u2005kGy gamma radiation. On the basis of the phylogenetic, chemotaxonomic and phenotypic data, strain KR-200<jats:sup>T<\/jats:sup> represents a novel species of the genus <jats:italic>Deinococcus<\/jats:italic>, for which the name <jats:italic>Deinococcus peraridilitoris<\/jats:italic> sp. nov. is proposed.
