Cells are Gram-negative, non-spore-forming, straight to curved rods with a single polar flagellum. Strain SUA2<jats:sup>T<\/jats:sup> is oxidase- and catalase-positive and is able to fix nitrogen. Poly-<jats:italic>\u03b2<\/jats:italic>-hydroxybutyrate storage granules are produced. Dominant fatty acids when grown in R2A and VM ethanol media for 72\u2005h at 37\u200a\u00b0C are C<jats:sub>16\u200a:\u200a0<\/jats:sub>, C<jats:sub>16\u200a:\u200a1<\/jats:sub>\n                  <jats:italic>\u03c9<\/jats:italic>7c, C<jats:sub>17\u200a:\u200a0<\/jats:sub> cyclo, C<jats:sub>10\u200a:\u200a0<\/jats:sub> 3-OH, C<jats:sub>18\u200a:\u200a1<\/jats:sub>\n                  <jats:italic>\u03c9<\/jats:italic>7c, C<jats:sub>12\u200a:\u200a0<\/jats:sub> and C<jats:sub>15\u200a:\u200a0<\/jats:sub>. DNA G+C content is 67.9\u2005mol%. Phenotypic and phylogenetic data indicate that strain SUA2<jats:sup>T<\/jats:sup> is related to, but clearly differentiated from <jats:italic>Azospira oryzae<\/jats:italic>. Strain SUA2<jats:sup>T<\/jats:sup> is thus proposed as a novel species of the genus <jats:italic>Azospira<\/jats:italic> with the name <jats:italic>Azospira restricta<\/jats:italic> sp. nov. The description of the genus <jats:italic>Azospira<\/jats:italic> is emended to include the characteristics of this novel species.
