{"status":"ok","message-type":"work","message-version":"1.0.0","message":{"indexed":{"date-parts":[[2025,11,11]],"date-time":"2025-11-11T12:47:15Z","timestamp":1762865235463},"reference-count":21,"publisher":"Microbiology Society","issue":"2","content-domain":{"domain":[],"crossmark-restriction":false},"short-container-title":[],"published-print":{"date-parts":[[2007,2,1]]},"abstract":"<jats:p>The C-terminal region of the <jats:italic>pbp5<\/jats:italic> gene was sequenced in 11 ampicillin-resistant and 5 ampicillin-susceptible <jats:italic>Enterococcus faecium<\/jats:italic> isolates of animal origin, and compared with a <jats:italic>pbp5<\/jats:italic> reference sequence (GenBank accession no. X84860). Eight different <jats:italic>pbp5<\/jats:italic> alleles (designated A\u2013H) were detected when amino acid changes in the region 461\u2013629 were considered. Three of these alleles (A\u2013C) were detected in ampicillin-susceptible isolates (MIC range 1\u20138\u2005\u03bcg\u2005ml<jats:sup>\u22121<\/jats:sup>), and included the changes 470H\u2192Q, 471V\u2192I, 487Q\u2192L, 581I\u2192V, 595E\u2192A or 622E\u2192D. The remaining five alleles (D\u2013H) were found in ampicillin-resistant isolates (MIC range 32\u2013256\u2005\u03bcg\u2005ml<jats:sup>\u22121<\/jats:sup>); three of these alleles (F\u2013H) presented a serine insertion at position 466\u2032, in addition to other important amino acid changes (485M\u2192A, 496N\u2192K, 499A\u2192T, 525E\u2192D, 586V\u2192L or 629E\u2192V). The other two alleles presented the amino acid changes 496N\u2192K and 629E\u2192V (allele D), and 470H\u2192Q (allele F). A correlation between deduced amino acid changes in PBP5 and ampicillin MICs was detected in animal <jats:italic>E. faecium<\/jats:italic>
