{"status":"ok","message-type":"work","message-version":"1.0.0","message":{"indexed":{"date-parts":[[2025,10,8]],"date-time":"2025-10-08T15:23:54Z","timestamp":1759937034661,"version":"3.41.2"},"reference-count":28,"publisher":"Emerald","issue":"5","license":[{"start":{"date-parts":[[2005,10,1]],"date-time":"2005-10-01T00:00:00Z","timestamp":1128124800000},"content-version":"tdm","delay-in-days":0,"URL":"https:\/\/www.emerald.com\/insight\/site-policies"}],"content-domain":{"domain":[],"crossmark-restriction":false},"short-container-title":[],"published-print":{"date-parts":[[2005,10,1]]},"abstract":"<jats:sec><jats:title content-type=\"abstract-heading\">Purpose<\/jats:title><jats:p>To construct web visibility profiles of news web sites by examining hyperlinks pointing to the sites.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title content-type=\"abstract-heading\">Design\/methodology\/approach<\/jats:title><jats:p>National newspapers from USA (<jats:italic>USA Today<\/jats:italic>), Canada (<jats:italic>The Globe and Mail<\/jats:italic>), China (<jats:italic>People's Daily<\/jats:italic>) as well as Hong Kong (<jats:italic>Sing Tao Daily<\/jats:italic>) were selected for the study. A total of 1,859 links pointing to the four news sites were manually classified into the four aspects of language, country, types of sites, and reasons or purposes for linking.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title content-type=\"abstract-heading\">Findings<\/jats:title><jats:p>A comparison of the four news sites provided useful information on their web visibility. <jats:italic>The Globe and Mail<\/jats:italic> seemed to have a larger international reach than <jats:italic>USA Today<\/jats:italic>. Neither newspaper web site attracted links from China or from pages in the Chinese language. Outside China, <jats:italic>People's Daily<\/jats:italic>, an official Chinese Government newspaper, is not as visible as Hong Kong based <jats:italic>Sing Tao Daily<\/jats:italic>. <jats:italic>USA Today<\/jats:italic> and <jats:italic>The Globe and Mail<\/jats:italic> were used more for news citing or reprinting purposes while <jats:italic>People's Daily<\/jats:italic> seemed to be used more as a research resource.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title content-type=\"abstract-heading\">Research limitations\/implications<\/jats:title><jats:p>Link analysis like this provides us with only an indirect view of the online readership and the methodology has limitations. Not all readers create links to the newspaper sites that they visit.
