A special purpose link analysis tool, LexiURL, then summarised and graphed the link data in appropriate ways.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title content-type=\"abstract-heading\">Findings<\/jats:title><jats:p>Webometrics can provide a wide range of descriptive information about the international connectivity of research groups.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title content-type=\"abstract-heading\">Research limitations\/implications<\/jats:title><jats:p>Only one field was analysed, data was taken from only one search engine, and the results were not validated.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title content-type=\"abstract-heading\">Practical implications<\/jats:title><jats:p>Web connectivity seems to be particularly important for attracting overseas job applicants and to promote research achievements and capabilities, and hence we contend that it can be useful for national and international governments to use webometrics to ensure that the web is being used effectively by research groups.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title content-type=\"abstract-heading\">Originality\/value<\/jats:title><jats:p>This is the first paper to make a case for the value of using a range of webometric techniques to evaluate the web presences of research groups within a field, and possibly the first \u201capplied\u201d webometrics study produced for an external contract.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec>","DOI":"10.1108\/00012530810847344","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2008,1,26]],"date-time":"2008-01-26T07:02:46Z","timestamp":1201330966000},"page":"18-31","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":6,"title":["Assessing the international web connectivity of research groups"],"prefix":"10.1108","volume":"60","author":[{"given":"Mike","family":"Thelwall","sequence":"first","affiliation":[]},{"given":"Xuemei","family":"Li","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"given":"Franz","family":"Barjak","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"given":"Simon","family":"Robinson","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]}],"member":"140","reference":[{"key":"key2022012420130859400_b1","unstructured":"Aguillo, I.F.
