{"status":"ok","message-type":"work","message-version":"1.0.0","message":{"indexed":{"date-parts":[[2026,3,10]],"date-time":"2026-03-10T17:18:27Z","timestamp":1773163107256,"version":"3.50.1"},"reference-count":6,"publisher":"Emerald","issue":"3","license":[{"start":{"date-parts":[[2005,9,1]],"date-time":"2005-09-01T00:00:00Z","timestamp":1125532800000},"content-version":"tdm","delay-in-days":0,"URL":"https:\/\/www.emerald.com\/insight\/site-policies"}],"content-domain":{"domain":[],"crossmark-restriction":false},"short-container-title":[],"published-print":{"date-parts":[[2005,9,1]]},"abstract":"<jats:sec><jats:title content-type=\"abstract-heading\">Purpose<\/jats:title><jats:p>To describe the key findings of the UK JISC\u2010funded Electronic Theses project that was led by The Robert Gordon University, as well as the results of associated projects that formed part of the JISC\u2010funded \u201cFAIR\u201d programme, and the way in which the recommendations will be taken forward.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title content-type=\"abstract-heading\">Design\/methodology\/approach<\/jats:title><jats:p>The research involved: an assessment of existing best practice relating to the production, management and use of e\u2010theses; the use of questionnaires to obtain feedback from potential users; the identification and testing of potentially useful software; consideration of the elements required in a metadata core set, and discussions with representative bodies to ensure that the model recommended for use in the UK had support from the key stakeholders.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title content-type=\"abstract-heading\">Findings<\/jats:title><jats:p>Information is provided about the value of the NDLTD web site, the suitability of DSpace and EPrints software for institutional e\u2010theses repositories, and the recommended infrastructure for the operation of an e\u2010theses service at national level. Details are included about the agreed metadata core set for UK e\u2010theses, and advice is provided about administrative, legal and cultural issues.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title content-type=\"abstract-heading\">Practical implications<\/jats:title><jats:p>The JISC\u2010funded EThOS project is taking forward many of the recommendations from the Electronic Theses project.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title content-type=\"abstract-heading\">Originality\/value<\/jats:title><jats:p>The research results described in this paper will be of use to institutions, which are aiming to establish their own e\u2010theses collections.
