Entropy weight method can get the weight coefficients of different risk indices objectively and is valid from the case study.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title content-type=\"abstract-heading\">Findings<\/jats:title><jats:p>The feasibility and validity of entropy weight methods to determine weight coefficients of different risk indices objectively are recognized.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title content-type=\"abstract-heading\">Research limitations\/implications<\/jats:title><jats:p>Accessibility and availability of data are the main limitations.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title content-type=\"abstract-heading\">Practical implications<\/jats:title><jats:p>The paper provides a more objective risk indicator of water security of drought periods for water resources managers.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title content-type=\"abstract-heading\">Originality\/value<\/jats:title><jats:p>This paper determines the weight coefficients of different risk indices for risk assessment of water security of drought periods based on hazard entropy.
