{"status":"ok","message-type":"work","message-version":"1.0.0","message":{"indexed":{"date-parts":[[2025,8,19]],"date-time":"2025-08-19T11:03:06Z","timestamp":1755601386736,"version":"3.41.2"},"reference-count":22,"publisher":"Emerald","issue":"1","license":[{"start":{"date-parts":[[2011,3,8]],"date-time":"2011-03-08T00:00:00Z","timestamp":1299542400000},"content-version":"tdm","delay-in-days":0,"URL":"https:\/\/www.emerald.com\/insight\/site-policies"}],"content-domain":{"domain":[],"crossmark-restriction":false},"short-container-title":[],"published-print":{"date-parts":[[2011,3,8]]},"abstract":"<jats:sec><jats:title content-type=\"abstract-heading\">Purpose<\/jats:title><jats:p>The purpose of this preliminary study is to identify the e\u2010book utilization habit of postgraduate and undergraduate students from the Mathematics Department of Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), and to determine the reasons why students are feeling comfortable or uncomfortable with the e\u2010book services offered by the library and the role the librarians can play in solving the identified obstacles.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title content-type=\"abstract-heading\">Design\/methodology\/approach<\/jats:title><jats:p>A qualitative approach which employs a face\u2010to\u2010face interview session was used to collect information on e\u2010book utilization habit and to capture perception of the e\u2010book services offered by UPM library.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title content-type=\"abstract-heading\">Findings<\/jats:title><jats:p>This research found that most of the participants use one common e\u2010book reading habit. Factors such as easy access reduce physical visits to the library and user\u2010friendly features offer a comfortable platform for the participant to use the mathematics e\u2010books. However, unreliable service, eye fatigue, lack of manipulability of online features and flaws in the physical design and insufficient e\u2010book collection cause the participants to feel uncomfortable with the service. Moreover, the role of librarians, publishers and interface designers is perceived to be an important remedy for all the inconvenience incurred.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title content-type=\"abstract-heading\">Research limitations\/implications<\/jats:title><jats:p>Only 70 participants participated in this preliminary study. Furthermore, e\u2010books from a single publisher (SIAM) were used to collect data from the participants.
