The study was funded by the National Library of New Zealand in order to take end\u2010user needs into consideration more fully in its development and presentation of digital cultural heritage resources.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title content-type=\"abstract-heading\">Design\/methodology\/approach<\/jats:title><jats:p>The study's research design involved a mixed quantitative and qualitative approach; a user survey comprising self\u2010administered, semi\u2010structured questionnaires, seven face\u2010to\u2010face semi\u2010structured interviews and one focus group.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title content-type=\"abstract-heading\">Findings<\/jats:title><jats:p>The findings outline the barriers users face in using New Zealand digital cultural heritage resources. They also highlight the user needs and features and characteristics they most desire in digital cultural heritage resources.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title content-type=\"abstract-heading\">Originality\/value<\/jats:title><jats:p>Only a handful of studies exist about end\u2010user needs with respect to the digitisation of cultural heritage materials and very few are research\u2010based articles.
