{"status":"ok","message-type":"work","message-version":"1.0.0","message":{"indexed":{"date-parts":[[2025,8,2]],"date-time":"2025-08-02T18:03:58Z","timestamp":1754157838711,"version":"3.41.2"},"reference-count":20,"publisher":"Emerald","issue":"1","license":[{"start":{"date-parts":[[2010,4,13]],"date-time":"2010-04-13T00:00:00Z","timestamp":1271116800000},"content-version":"tdm","delay-in-days":0,"URL":"https:\/\/www.emerald.com\/insight\/site-policies"}],"content-domain":{"domain":[],"crossmark-restriction":false},"short-container-title":[],"published-print":{"date-parts":[[2010,4,13]]},"abstract":"<jats:sec><jats:title content-type=\"abstract-heading\">Purpose<\/jats:title><jats:p>The purpose of this paper is to report results from an evaluation of an online abstract mentoring programme to support early career and less experienced human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) researchers improve their chances of acceptance to International HIV\/Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome Conferences.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title content-type=\"abstract-heading\">Design\/methodology\/approach<\/jats:title><jats:p>An evaluation study was conducted on the impact of this programme over two conferences. Survey questionnaires also gathered data on the perceptions of users and mentors on the value of online mentoring.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title content-type=\"abstract-heading\">Findings<\/jats:title><jats:p>Results from the evaluation show that online mentoring increased the motivation and acceptance rate of early career and less experienced researchers, especially from low\u2010 and middle\u2010income countries.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title content-type=\"abstract-heading\">Research limitations\/implications<\/jats:title><jats:p>This study shows that the use of online mentoring at a distance can make access to desirable literacy practices for researchers\u2019 professional development more equitable, and enhance the added value of informal learning in today's lifelong learning context. It also shows a cost\u2010effective way to use technology to widen participation of early career researchers from resource\u2010limited settings, and improve their understanding of the practice of writing up and publishing research for competitive international conferences or journals.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title content-type=\"abstract-heading\">Practical implications<\/jats:title><jats:p>With a situated and constructivist view of online teaching and learning, the paper considers the implications for redesigning future global conferences as collaborative capacity\u2010building spaces, via the use of Web 2.0 technologies.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title content-type=\"abstract-heading\">Originality\/value<\/jats:title><jats:p>This paper provides research capacity builders with insights into the use of online mentoring to not only build writing skills, but also to enhance the induction of novices into a global learning community.
