Software product line (SPL) is at the forefront among the techniques for reducing costs, decreasing schedule time, and ensuring commonality of features across a family of products \u2013 as COTS are reused in multiple products.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title content-type=\"abstract-heading\">Design\/methodology\/approach<\/jats:title><jats:p>A disciplined process for SPL development is still needed. This paper proposes the Y\u2010model for COTS\u2010based SPL development. The model put forward identifies and elaborates the essential phases and activities of SPL development from COTS\u2010based repository.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title content-type=\"abstract-heading\">Findings<\/jats:title><jats:p>The Y\u2010model provides an efficient way of integrating the approaches of SPL and COTS\u2010based development as a cohesive software development model.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title content-type=\"abstract-heading\">Practical implications<\/jats:title><jats:p>The model has the potential to tremendously increase software engineers' productivity.
