{"status":"ok","message-type":"work","message-version":"1.0.0","message":{"indexed":{"date-parts":[[2026,4,27]],"date-time":"2026-04-27T12:57:25Z","timestamp":1777294645665,"version":"3.51.4"},"reference-count":35,"publisher":"Emerald","issue":"1","license":[{"start":{"date-parts":[[2001,2,1]],"date-time":"2001-02-01T00:00:00Z","timestamp":980985600000},"content-version":"tdm","delay-in-days":0,"URL":"https:\/\/www.emerald.com\/insight\/site-policies"}],"content-domain":{"domain":[],"crossmark-restriction":false},"short-container-title":[],"published-print":{"date-parts":[[2001,2,1]]},"abstract":"<jats:p>The aim of this article is threefold: (1) to give a summary of empirical results reported earlier on relations between students\u2018 problem stages in the course of writing their research proposals for a master\u2019s thesis and the information sought, choice of search terms and tactics and relevance assessments of the information found for that task; (2) to show how the findings of the study refine Kuhlthau\u2018s model of the information search process in the field of information retrieval (IR); and (3) to construe a tentative theory of a task\u2010based IR process based on the supported hypotheses. The results of the empirical studies show that there is a close connection between the students\u2019 problem stages (mental model) in the task performance and the information sought, the search tactics used and the assessment of the relevance and utility of the information found. The corroborated hypotheses expand the ideas in Kuhlthau\u2018s model in the domain of IR.
