The authors considered three main aspects: student\u2019s background, the level of knowledge and the most suitable style of learning. At the beginning of the course, students were randomly divided into reference and test group. The test group students were continuously supported by different tools within an e-learning environment. The learning process for the reference group students was held in a traditional form.<\/jats:p>\n<\/jats:sec>\n<jats:sec>\n<jats:title content-type=\"abstract-subheading\">Findings<\/jats:title>\n<jats:p>The success of the experiment presented in this paper is demonstrated by comparing the results of the test group who were taught using the new strategy with the reference group who were taught in a common way. The statistical analysis shows that the test group students had better achievements compared to the reference group.<\/jats:p>\n<\/jats:sec>\n<jats:sec>\n<jats:title content-type=\"abstract-subheading\">Research Limitations\/implications<\/jats:title>\n<jats:p>This presented study was carried out with non-IT first-year university students from social sciences, economics and technical faculties. Each year the number of students varied from 150 to 300.<\/jats:p>\n<\/jats:sec>\n<jats:sec>\n<jats:title content-type=\"abstract-subheading\">Originality\/value<\/jats:title>\n<jats:p>Based on developed methodology, the model of individualization of the educational process in an e-environment was created and implemented in the course of Informatics in Tallinn University of Technology.<\/jats:p>\n<\/jats:sec>","DOI":"10.1108\/itse-09-2015-0025","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2016,4,26]],"date-time":"2016-04-26T04:36:44Z","timestamp":1461645404000},"page":"19-35","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":7,"title":["Maximizing and personalizing e-learning support for students with different backgrounds and preferences"],"prefix":"10.1108","volume":"13","author":[{"given":"Olga","family":"Mironova","sequence":"first","affiliation":[]},{"given":"Irina","family":"Amitan","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"given":"Jelena","family":"Vendelin","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"given":"J\u00fcri","family":"Vilip\u00f5ld","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"given":"Merike","family":"Saar","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]}],"member":"140","reference":[{"edition":"1st ed.","volume-title":"ABCs of e-Learning: Reaping the Benefits and Avoiding the Pitfalls","year":"2002","key":"key2020121701492135400_ref001"},{"key":"key2020121701492135400_ref002","unstructured":"College Board (2015), \u201cAP computer science principles\u201d, available at: https:\/\/advancesinap.collegeboard.org\/stem\/computer-science-principles (accessed 4 May 2015)."},{"key":"key2020121701492135400_ref003","unstructured":"Computer Science Teachers Association (2015), \u201cComputational thinking task force\u201d, available at: http:\/\/csta.acm.org\/Curriculum\/sub\/CompThinking.html (accessed 2 May 2015)."},{"key":"key2020121701492135400_ref004","unstructured":"ECDL Foundation (2015), \u201cECDL foundation\u201d, available at: www.ecdl.com (accessed 1 May 2015)."},{"issue":"1","key":"key2020121701492135400_ref005","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"57","DOI":"10.1002\/j.2168-9830.2005.tb00829.x","article-title":"Understanding students differences","volume":"94","year":"2005","journal-title":"Journal of Engineering Education"},{"issue":"1","key":"key2020121701492135400_ref006","first-page":"103","article-title":"Applications, reliability, and validity of the index of learning styles","volume":"21","year":"2005","journal-title":"International Journal of Engineering Education"},{"key":"key2020121701492135400_ref007","unstructured":"George Lucas Educational Foundation (2014), \u201cProject-based learning\u201d, available at: www.edutopia.org\/project-based-learning (accessed 24 November 2014)."},{"key":"key2020121701492135400_ref008","unstructured":"Khan Academy (2015), \u201cKhan academy\u201d, available at: www.khanacademy.org\/ (accessed 3 May 2015)."},{"volume-title":"Experimental Learning","year":"1984","key":"key2020121701492135400_ref009"},{"key":"key2020121701492135400_ref010","unstructured":"MIT Media Lab (2015), \u201cScratch \u2013 imagine, program, share\u201d, available at: http:\/\/scratch.mit.edu\/ (accessed 6 May 2015)."},{"key":"key2020121701492135400_ref011","unstructured":"Moodle Trust (2015), \u201cOpen-source learning platform | Moodle.org\u201d, available at: https:\/\/moodle.org\/ (accessed 6 May 2015)."},{"issue":"3","key":"key2020121701492135400_ref012","article-title":"The lived experience of flexible education \u2013 theory, policy and practice","volume":"8","year":"2011","journal-title":"Journal of University Teaching & Learning Practice"}],"container-title":["Interactive Technology and Smart Education"],"original-title":[],"language":"en","link":[{"URL":"http:\/\/www.emeraldinsight.com\/doi\/full-xml\/10.1108\/ITSE-09-2015-0025","content-type":"unspecified","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"text-mining"},{"URL":"https:\/\/www.emerald.com\/insight\/content\/doi\/10.1108\/ITSE-09-2015-0025\/full\/xml","content-type":"application\/xml","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"text-mining"},{"URL":"https:\/\/www.emerald.com\/insight\/content\/doi\/10.1108\/ITSE-09-2015-0025\/full\/html","content-type":"unspecified","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"similarity-checking"}],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2025,7,24]],"date-time":"2025-07-24T21:56:56Z","timestamp":1753394216000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"http:\/\/www.emerald.com\/itse\/article\/13\/1\/19-35\/181164"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2016,4,18]]},"references-count":12,"journal-issue":{"issue":"1","published-print":{"date-parts":[[2016,4,18]]}},"alternative-id":["10.1108\/ITSE-09-2015-0025"],"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1108\/itse-09-2015-0025","relation":{},"ISSN":["1741-5659"],"issn-type":[{"type":"print","value":"1741-5659"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2016,4,18]]}}}
