{"status":"ok","message-type":"work","message-version":"1.0.0","message":{"indexed":{"date-parts":[[2026,4,23]],"date-time":"2026-04-23T08:17:21Z","timestamp":1776932241576,"version":"3.51.2"},"reference-count":57,"publisher":"Emerald","issue":"3","license":[{"start":{"date-parts":[[2021,1,18]],"date-time":"2021-01-18T00:00:00Z","timestamp":1610928000000},"content-version":"tdm","delay-in-days":0,"URL":"https:\/\/www.emerald.com\/insight\/site-policies"}],"content-domain":{"domain":[],"crossmark-restriction":false},"short-container-title":["JD"],"published-print":{"date-parts":[[2021,4,8]]},"abstract":"<jats:sec><jats:title content-type=\"abstract-subheading\">Purpose<\/jats:title><jats:p>The purpose of this study is to provide an overview of social justice research in library and information science (LIS) literature in order to identify the research quantity, what populations or settings were included and future directions for this area of the discipline through examination of when related research was published, what contexts it covered and what contributions LIS researchers have made in this research area.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title content-type=\"abstract-subheading\">Design\/methodology\/approach<\/jats:title><jats:p>This study reviews results from two LIS literature databases\u2014Library, Information Science and Technology Abstracts (LISTA) and Library and Information Science Source (LISS)\u2014that use the term \u201csocial justice\u201d in title, abstract or full text to explicitly or implicitly describe their research.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title content-type=\"abstract-subheading\">Findings<\/jats:title><jats:p>This review of the literature using the term social justice to describe LIS research recognizes the significant increase in quantities of related research over the first two\u00a0decades of the 21st century as well as the emergence of numerous contexts in which that research is situated.
