{"status":"ok","message-type":"work","message-version":"1.0.0","message":{"indexed":{"date-parts":[[2026,3,18]],"date-time":"2026-03-18T04:01:26Z","timestamp":1773806486092,"version":"3.50.1"},"reference-count":96,"publisher":"Emerald","issue":"5","license":[{"start":{"date-parts":[[2023,2,15]],"date-time":"2023-02-15T00:00:00Z","timestamp":1676419200000},"content-version":"tdm","delay-in-days":0,"URL":"https:\/\/www.emerald.com\/insight\/site-policies"}],"content-domain":{"domain":[],"crossmark-restriction":false},"short-container-title":["JD"],"published-print":{"date-parts":[[2023,8,25]]},"abstract":"<jats:sec><jats:title content-type=\"abstract-subheading\">Purpose<\/jats:title><jats:p>The purpose of the article is to introduce the outcomes of a study analyzing the relationships between willingness to use technology for health purposes, health information behavior (HIB), health behavior (HB) choices, readiness for COVID-19 vaccination, socioeconomic indicators and self-reported health among older adults aged\u00a0=\u00a050\u00a0years living in Estonia.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title content-type=\"abstract-subheading\">Design\/methodology\/approach<\/jats:title><jats:p>A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 501 people aged\u00a0=\u00a050 in\u00a0Estonia in 2020, a month after the end of lockdown.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title content-type=\"abstract-subheading\">Findings<\/jats:title><jats:p>The results of the study indicate that the more recurrent the need for HI was (rho\u00a0=\u00a00.11, <jats:italic>p<\/jats:italic>\u00a0&lt;\u00a00.05) and the more regularly one searched for it (rho\u00a0=\u00a00.14, <jats:italic>p<\/jats:italic>\u00a0&lt;\u00a00.01), the more willing a person was to get vaccinated. Also, interest in digital applications corresponded to vaccination readiness (rho\u00a0=\u00a00.25, <jats:italic>p<\/jats:italic>\u00a0&lt;\u00a00.001). However, this relationship did not emerge in the case of other HBs such as healthy eating and exercise. Differences in HIB should be taken into account when developing effective means of health communication designed especially for crisis situations.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title content-type=\"abstract-subheading\">Originality\/value<\/jats:title><jats:p>Estonia is known as one of the digital front runners in the world. However, social welfare and the well-being of disadvantaged groups among the population (e.g. older people) have not yet caught up with the more developed Western countries.
