In addition, it discusses specific aspects of the model with respect to the pre-existing models of bibliographic description.<\/jats:p>\n<\/jats:sec>\n<jats:sec>\n<jats:title content-type=\"abstract-subheading\">Design\/methodology\/approach<\/jats:title>\n<jats:p>A review of source and secondary materials regarding BIBFRAME was undertaken, and a comparison of the conclusions derived from this literature was made to the pre-existing models of bibliographic description.<\/jats:p>\n<\/jats:sec>\n<jats:sec>\n<jats:title content-type=\"abstract-subheading\">Findings<\/jats:title>\n<jats:p>If the BIBFRAME Initiative can overcome what will likely be some significant challenges to the development and implementation of the model, BIBFRAME appears to be poised to become the next standard of bibliographic description and exchange for the library community.<\/jats:p>\n<\/jats:sec>\n<jats:sec>\n<jats:title content-type=\"abstract-subheading\">Research limitations\/implications<\/jats:title>\n<jats:p>The findings and conclusions of this paper are based upon an in-depth literature review, not on theoretical or empirical derivations or examples. As a result, further research of both theoretical and empirical natures need to be developed.<\/jats:p>\n<\/jats:sec>\n<jats:sec>\n<jats:title content-type=\"abstract-subheading\">Practical implications<\/jats:title>\n<jats:p>BIBFRAME may well become the next standard of bibliographic description and exchange for the library community, leading to significant changes in cataloging practices over the years.<\/jats:p>\n<\/jats:sec>\n<jats:sec>\n<jats:title content-type=\"abstract-subheading\">Social implications<\/jats:title>\n<jats:p>To the extent that BIBFRAME can expand discovery mechanisms, the vast array of information currently available to information seekers will open up in previously unthought of ways.<\/jats:p>\n<\/jats:sec>\n<jats:sec>\n<jats:title content-type=\"abstract-subheading\">Originality\/value<\/jats:title>\n<jats:p>This paper synthesizes a literature that was developed during a more preliminary design of the bibliographic model BIBFRAME and adds to the literature by discussing newer capabilities that have been designed into BIBFRAME 2.0.<\/jats:p>\n<\/jats:sec>","DOI":"10.1108\/lht-08-2017-0176","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2018,11,30]],"date-time":"2018-11-30T09:21:47Z","timestamp":1543569707000},"page":"549-565","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":11,"title":["Benefits and challenges of BIBFRAME"],"prefix":"10.1108","volume":"37","author":[{"given":"Jung-Ran","family":"Park","sequence":"first","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-1554-2462","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Lorraine L.","family":"Richards","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Andrew","family":"Brenza","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"140","reference":[{"issue":"1\/4","key":"key2019092008525819500_ref001","first-page":"76","article-title":"From record bound to boundless: FRBR, linked data, and new possibilities for serials cataloguing","volume":"66","year":"2014","journal-title":"The Serials Librarian: From the Printed Page to the Digital Age"},{"issue":"2\u20133","key":"key2019092008525819500_ref017","first-page":"251","article-title":"Linked serial data: mapping the CONSER standard record to BIBFRAME","volume":"56","year":"2018","journal-title":"Cataloging & Classification Quarterly"},{"key":"key2019092008525819500_ref002","unstructured":"BIBFRAME (2012), \u201cThe bibliographic framework as a web of data: linked data model and supporting services\u201d, available at: www.loc.gov\/bibframe\/pdf\/marcld-report-11-21-2012.pdf (accessed August 15, 2017)."},{"key":"key2019092008525819500_ref006","unstructured":"BIBFRAME (2014), \u201cOn BIBFRAME authority\u201d, available at: http:\/\/bibframe.org\/documentation\/bibframe-authority\/ (accessed August 15, 2017)."},{"key":"key2019092008525819500_ref003","unstructured":"BIBFRAME (n.d.-a), \u201cBIBFRAME implementation testbed\u201d, available at: www.loc.gov\/bibframe\/implementation\/testbed.html (accessed August 15, 2017)."},{"key":"key2019092008525819500_ref004","unstructured":"BIBFRAME (n.d.-b), \u201cBIBFRAME 2.0 RDF conventions\u201d, available at: www.loc.gov\/bibframe\/docs\/bibframe2-rdf-conventions.html (accessed August 15, 2017)."},{"key":"key2019092008525819500_ref005","unstructured":"BIBFRAME (n.d.-c), \u201cOverview of the BIBFRAME model\u201d, available at: www.loc.gov\/bibframe\/docs\/model.html (accessed August 15, 2017)."},{"issue":"3","key":"key2019092008525819500_ref007","first-page":"20","article-title":"Linked data: the next big wave or another tech fad?","volume":"33","year":"2013","journal-title":"Computers in Libraries"},{"key":"key2019092008525819500_ref008","article-title":"Charles A.
